A nature-based writing workshop for adventurous children 10-14.
Immersed in a Branchpoint Ramble & Write workshop, children 10-14 tramp in nature, find something that appeals to them and begin to write. They craft their way to something–a poem, story, or ‘field notes’ observations. They continue their writing at home and get excited to share it with the group.
A Ramble & Write harnesses a child’s innate sense of wonder to the concrete act of putting words together. It’s a particular way of being in nature that actively engages imagination. Students gain a sense of accomplishment from creating original work and sharing it with peers.
Ramble & Writers are also young naturalists. They gain or build upon field knowledge of trees, animals, and plants that deepens their wild forays and their writing, allowing them to be experts in something, and increasing self esteem.
What do children gain from a Branchpoint Ramble & Write workshop?
A community of fellow writers
A patient writing coach
Increased confidence with writing
A deeper relation to nature
Tools and frameworks for writing
Species-level field learning
" I design these workshops to match my own experience of the natural world and the written word. When exploring in the wilds, I enjoy the pleasure of movement; I let go of all else on my mind; I get quiet; I notice beauty, intricacy of design, and diversity of form and color; I marvel at everything. I look for 'presence' as spoken by animal sign. All of this activates and engages my imagination, readying me for later writing. When the writing goes well, I feel my imagination as a force beyond my ken, coming through me. This is the experience I want for my students."
